Mucus-stimulating factor in tears

چکیده
Discussion. The implantable system described in this report provides a method for delivering aqueous solutions to the external rabbit eye for at least 6 weeks. The PTFE tube is implanted in the superior conjunctival fornix 4 weeks prior to the implantation of the pump. During this time fibrous tissue ingrowth secures the tube firmly to the surrounding tissues. By allowing the tube to be anchored by fibrous tissue ingrowth, problems with extrusion or retraction are largely eliminated. The tube appears to be well tolerated, and the Infusaid pump provides a fluid source which is easily refilled and requires no batteries or external power source. The system provides a convenient, dependable method for delivering drugs to the external eye for at least 6 weeks. This is an advantage over the Alzet minipump, which lasts for approximately 1 week and requires replacement thereafter. The present system can be refilled repeatedly without surgical intervention or manipulation of the ocular tissues. This reduces the risk of inflammation and infection at the pump sites.

Immunological study of proteins and mucosubstance in saline soluble human ocular mucus.
Proteins and mucosubstance of the saline extract of human ocular mucus were studied by immunological analysis. A minor study was made with human tears for comparison. Immunoelectrophoresis of proteins from these two sources consistently revealed similar characteristic gel patterns. Proteins were found as the major constituents of both samples. However, more mucosubstance was present in the sali...

Bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interleukin (IL)-13 increase mucus secretion and inflammatory cytokine production in normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) cells. We evaluated the effect of club cell 10-kDa protein (CC10), an anti-inflammatory protein produced by epithelial cells, on mucus secretion, cell morphology and inflammatory cytokine production. NHBE cells were cultured at an a...
متن کاملTHE ROLE OF ALVEOLAR MACROPHAGES IN THE PRODUCTION OF COLONY –STIMULATING FACTOR BY THE LUNG
The role of alveolar macrophages in the production of granulocyte/ macrophage colony-stimulating factor(s) by the rat lung was investigated. Lavaged lungs, when incubated at proper weight per volume of culture medium, produced the same amount of colony-stimulating factor as unlavaged ones. Both lavaged and unlavaged lungs produced similar types of colony-stimulating factor (s). Prolonged i...
متن کاملComparison of ophthalmic sponges and extraction buffers for quantifying cytokine profiles in tears using Luminex technology
PURPOSE Evaluating cytokine profiles in tears could shed light on the pathogenesis of various ocular surface diseases. When collecting tears with the methods currently available, it is often not possible to avoid the tear reflex, which may give a different cytokine profile compared to basal tears. More importantly, tear collection with glass capillaries, the most widely used method for taking s...
متن کاملPatients undergoing long-term treatment with antihypertensive eye drops responded positively with respect to their ocular surface disorder to oral supplementation with antioxidants and essential fatty acids
BACKGROUND Glaucoma and dry eye disorders (DEDs) are frequent comorbidities. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids have been extensively studied in relation to eye diseases. OBJECTIVE Our objective was to determine the effects of oral supplementation with a combined formulation of antioxidants and essential polyunsaturated fatty acids on exp...
